Comprises copy of The Catalogue of the Melbourne Public Library for 1861, with gold lettering on the cover "Presented by the Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library, To the Honourable The Chief Secr., John O'Shanassy Esq. M. L. A.". Also, letter from Redmond Barry, dated January 1862, to John O'Shanassy relating to the presentation of the copy of the catalogue. Letter is written on letterhead paper which is decorated with an illustration of the library buildings, and makes frequent mention of the Chief Librarian at the time, Augustus Tulk.
